All you need to know about CUET
UGC (university grant commission) on 21st march announced that students will have to appear in CUET (common university entrance test) in order to get admission as a undergraduate student for 22-23 session in 45 central universities who are funded by UGC. University will admit students on the basis of CUET score with zero weightage of board exam.
WHY CUET?
UGC claims that this will reduce the burden of writing multiple exams moreover this entrance test will set a standard benchmark for all students of different board
IMPORTANCE OF BOARD EXAM
Addressing over the importance of board exam, UGC chairperson said that ‘students shouldn’t neglect or disregard the board exam entirely because the same will be used by the universities to create eligibility criterion’. For example, they can say students having minimum x marks in board exam and y marks in CUET are eligible to apply for this university. (Note- x and y doesn’t represent any actual figure of marks).
FORMAT OF THE TEST
The test will be divided into four sections as I A and B , ii and iii which is going to be conducted in CBT mode( computer based test) . I A will test the students command over language. The question will include factual, literary, narrative passage and synonymous words.
Section I B will be for undergraduate degree in foreign language. Section II will assess students understanding in the core subjects which they wish to pursue for undergraduate level. For the former one their will be 50 questions out of which 40 questions have to attempt in 45 minutes.
Since, there are certain universities which admit their students without prioritizing the understanding of core subject, instead they check general understanding. So for those students who wants to get admission in such universities, there will be a General test in section iii, which will be designed in such a way that; it will check general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability test, quantitative reasoning from mensuration, algebra, geometry taught until class 8.
This test will be conducted in two shifts, in first shift student will be able to write one language, two domain subjects and a general test while in second shift student will be able to write up to four domain subject and a foreign language.
ELIGIBILTY AND WHEN TO APPLY
NTA who has been entrusted to conduct this CUET examination has said that class 12th will be enough to perform well in this exam. UGC chairperson M. Jagdish Kumar said in an interview interview,” there is no need to have special coaching for the same since the question will be of moderate level” from standard 12th NCERT syllabus.
HOW CUET WILL PREPARE MERIT LIST
CUET will provide marks only which will be later used for admission on the basis of score obtained. There won’t be any declaration of ranking for this exam just marks. There will be negative marking for wrong answer.
However, there are a lot of debate over the fact that this will take towards rise of coaching, giving less importance to schooling, killing creativity and primarily this will create hindrance to financially insufficient students.
